Where to Donate Fabric You Aren’t Using in Your Stash

If you’ve been quilting or sewing for a while, chances are you’ve built up a fabric stash that’s bigger than you expected. While it’s fun to collect beautiful prints and quilting cottons, sometimes we realize we may never use all of it. The good news? Your extra fabric can make a difference! Donating quilting fabric is a wonderful way to clear space in your sewing room while blessing others. Here are a few ideas for where to share your unused fabric.

1. Local Quilting Guilds and Sewing Groups
Many quilt guilds and community sewing circles accept fabric donations. Members often use the fabric to create charity quilts, pillowcases, or other handmade items for hospitals, shelters, and local nonprofits.

2. Schools and Community Centers
Art teachers are always grateful for fabric scraps and yardage to use in student projects. Community centers, after-school programs, and scouting groups also appreciate fabric for crafts and sewing lessons.

3. Churches and Nonprofits
Some churches and nonprofit organizations host sewing ministries that make quilts, blankets, and clothing for people in need. Ask around locally—you might be surprised how many groups could use your fabric donations.

4. Hospitals and NICUs
Children’s hospitals, NICUs, and cancer treatment centers often welcome donations of handmade quilts. If you can’t sew up all your fabric yourself, consider donating yardage to local sewing volunteers who create these special gifts of comfort.

5. Thrift Stores and Reuse Shops
Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStores, or independent thrift shops often accept fabric donations. Not only does this keep fabric out of landfills, but it also allows other crafters to buy it affordably.

6. Online “Fabric Swaps” and Buy Nothing Groups
If you want your stash to go directly to another sewist, consider joining a local Buy Nothing group or a fabric swap online. It’s a fun way to connect with other makers while passing along fabric you no longer need.

Giving Fabric a New Life
Donating fabric is more than just decluttering—it’s sharing creativity, comfort, and community. Whether your extra yardage goes to a quilt guild, school project, or charity, you can feel good knowing it will inspire joy in someone else’s hands.
